About the PhD in Medical Genetics
Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) offers postgraduate education through the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS). Oversight of research and the academic program is carried out by university bodies including the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR), Institutional (ethical) Review Board (IRB), Doctoral Admission Committee, and PhD Advisory Committee. Currently, over 180 M.Phil and PhD students have graduated from DUHS and are holding key positions at esteemed National and International institutions.
Medical Genetics is a broad discipline and involves integration of basic Genetic Principles in to the practice of Medicine. It encompasses various subdomains including Clinical Genetics, Genetic Counseling, Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics.
The Genetic “revolution” that has occurred over the last 25 years has thrust Genetics in to the mainstream of medical practice. Most disciplines within Medicine are now utilizing Genetic principles, Genetic information and Genetic techniques in the practice of its field.
In accordance with the vision and mission of DUHS of providing patient-centered education and training, School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS, DUHS) is pleased to offer a programme in PhD Medical Genetics. The program focuses on training in laboratory based Genetics and provide the candidate with an opportunity to learn and interpret the Genetic and Genomic analyses relevant to the diagnosis and management of Human Genetic diseases. DUHS has recently established state of an art facility, Dow DOGANA advanced Molecular Genetics and Genomics Diseases Research and Treatment Centre which is equipped with latest equipment and will be the training centre for the PhD candidate and his/her thesis research. One of the signature programs of DUHS is “Precision Medicine, Genomics an Informatics” and competitive funding opportunities are available for PhD candidates as part of Vice Chancellors Seed funding Initiative (VCSFI).
