On November 2, 2024, the Dow Institute of Nursing & Midwifery (DIONAM) inaugurated its exclusive Nursing Research Cell, marking a significant milestone in the field of nursing research in Pakistan. The ceremony, presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Saeed Quraishy T.I, was a distinguished event attended by prominent professionals from AKUSONAM, IUH, SU, NICVD, the Health Department of the Government of Sindh, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, and other key officials and department heads.
In his opening address, Prof. Quraishy commended the dedicated efforts of Ms. Rubina Qasim, Principal of DIONAM, and her team for their vital contributions to DUHS’s rising global reputation. He noted that nursing research in Pakistan has historically been limited, but DIONAM’s Research Cell represents a breakthrough, paving the way for impactful research. “Get your work published and be counted,” he encouraged, emphasizing the importance of academic contributions.
Principal Ms. Qasim delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Research Cell’s evolution, driven by the consistent efforts of the DIONAM faculty. She highlighted a notable project conducted in Landhi-Quaidabad, a highly underserved area of Karachi. In a community of over 150,000 residents, largely of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and under-resourced locals, her team conducted pioneering research addressing severe public health challenges, such as high rates of polio vaccine refusals due to misinformation. This project led to research findings now cited in several global journals with impact factors ranging from 4 to 6, underscoring the cell’s international reach.
Ms. Qasim expressed optimism for increased global collaborations with international NGOs, including UNICEF. Her team includes Associate/Assistant Prof. Mohammad Yaqoob, Faraz Siddiqui, Rukhsana Haroon, Muhamooda Razzaque, and administrators Waqas Ali and Kashif.
