On January 7, 2025, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) celebrated a significant milestone with the inauguration of its Temporal Bone Dissection Skill Laboratory at Dow Medical College.

The ceremony was graced by esteemed guests, including:

-Chief Guest: Prof. Tariq Rafi, Chairman, HEC Sindh

-Guest of Honour: Prof. Mohammed Saeed Quraishy T.I, Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences

-Prof. Nazli Hossain, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences

-Prof. Saba Sohail, Principal, Dow Medical College

-Dr. Shadaba Ahmed, esteemed foreign faculty from the UK

-Dedicated faculty members and postgraduate trainees of the department.

A pivotal moment arrived in November 2005 with the inaugural four-day hands-on temporal bone dissection workshop and ear surgery course in Karachi, spearheaded by the esteemed late Prof. Jawaid Alam. This landmark event, hosted by the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital Karachi, set a new standard for advanced training within the field.

Building upon this foundation, the Temporal Bone Dissection Skill Lab at Dow Medical College, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), emerged under the leadership of Prof. Zeba Ahmed, Chairperson of the ENT Department at DUHS. With unwavering support from Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Saeed Quraishy T.I, his visionary leadership, and the enthusiastic backing of Principal DMC Dr. Saba Sohail, the lab was meticulously established, providing a dedicated space for residents to hone their surgical skills.

The laboratory boasts seven stations, five of which are fully equipped with operating microscopes.

Objectives:

-Develop hands-on skills in temporal bone dissection and surgery.

-Enhance understanding of temporal bone anatomy and its relationships.

-Improve familiarity with surgical instruments and equipment.

-Understand basic dissection techniques.

-Develop fine motor skills for precise dissection.

-Understand the surgical approaches.

-Develop the ability to identify and preserve vital structures.
