Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) is proud to play a transformative role in empowering Pakistani women doctors to reclaim their careers through the e-Doctor program, an initiative in collaboration with the Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
Recognizing the challenges societal norms pose for female doctors in Pakistan, this program addresses the need to bring highly skilled women back into the healthcare field.
Dr. Farah Farooq is one of over 30,000 women doctors in Pakistan who graduated between 1989 and 2017 but either did not enter the medical profession due to societal pressures or left it after marriage.
In this video, she shares her experience of how IsDB came to her aid. It provided a second chance for doctors like Dr. Farooq to fulfill their dreams by extending financial support to the Pakistani educational technology platform EduCast and Dow University of Health Sciences.
Professor Dr. Jahan Ara Hassan, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Medical Superintendent of DUHS Ojha Campus, and a central figure in the e-Doctor program, emphasized the urgency of this effort, highlighting that nearly 70 percent of Pakistan’s medical students are women, yet many are unable to practice due to early marriages or cultural restrictions.
Over the past six years, the e-Doctor program has successfully trained around 1,500 women doctors, equipping them with essential skills in medicine.
DUHS remains committed to initiatives that empower women to pursue meaningful careers and contribute to society, strengthening healthcare services nationwide.
