CME Workshop on Newborn Management in the Golden Hour

Management of newborns in the initial hours of life is the standard of care to prevent complications of birth asphyxia and neonatal deaths worldwide. Pakistan has a neonatal mortality rate (NMR) of 41 deaths per 1,000 live births, one of the highest in the world. Therefore, the Department of Pediatrics Unit I organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) workshop on the latest updates in the management of newborns during the Golden Hour on January 15, 2025. This event was held at the Conference Room, Department of Pediatrics Unit I, Dow Medical College, Dow University of Health Sciences / Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, and was attended by faculty members, house officers, and students.

Prof. Dr. Muzamil Shabana Ejaz, Chairperson of Pediatrics, was the course director of the program. The event was facilitated by Dr. Ayesha Saleem, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, who delivered the introductory remarks. Dr. Hafiza Sania highlighted the significance of newborn management during the Golden Hour.

The program also included hands-on practice sessions led by Dr. Hafiza Sania and Dr. Asim Rauf. The students and house officers left with increased awareness and an improved understanding of newborn management during the Golden Hour, contributing to efforts to reduce the neonatal mortality rate.

Aligned SDGs: The workshop supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) and Quality Education (SDG 4).
