The Green Youth Movement (GYM) is an initiative of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program. The program aims to enable youth in the country to spearhead sustainable development and green growth in the country. The initiative is also a means to transition toward SDGs no. 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15 & 17.

KEY OBJECTIVES

  • Sensitize and organize youth for the promotion of environmental conservation and eco-friendly behavior among the masses
  • Technically and financially invest in the demographic bulge of Pakistan youth and promote research and eco-innovation to spearhead  environmental  conservation and climate adaptation and mitigation
  • To mentor and promote young eco-inventors at the national, regional, and international levels
  • Harness global breakthroughs on eco-innovations for Pakistan
  • Establish model green campuses-living labs for the promotion of best practices in renewable energy, waste management, water conservation, air quality maintenance, forestation/plantation, and eco-tourism.

FORMATION OF GYM CLUBS

Each public sector university (137) will establish its GYM Clubs and select the core team through ‘Green Elections.’ A total of 137 GYM Clubs will be constituted in public universities.

Certificate and prize distribution ceremony of proposal writing competition on “Clean and Green Karachi”, Prime Minister’s Program of green youth movement club (GYM-DUHS) was held on 31st May 2023 at Dow College of Pharmacy, Dow University of Health Sciences.
The students of both campuses, DMC as well as Ojha campus, participated in the competition. Faculty members of DUHS also enthusiastically participated in the competition.
The Honorable Pro Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof. Dr. Nazli Hossain, Regional Director HEC Dr. Javed Ali Memon, Principal Dow College of Pharmacy and Focal Person to HEC for GYM-DUHS Prof. Dr. Sumbul Shamim, Principal Dow International Medical College, Prof. Dr. Zeba Haq, graced the occasion along with the Chairpersons and the senior faculty members.
The guest speaker was Mr. Muhammad Saifullah, Entrepreneurship and ecosystem specialist, Communication and PR, Partnerships and Synergies, Shell LiveWIRE (Shell Tameer) Pakistan. The lecture given by the guest speaker motivates the young audience members.
 
The results of the competition were announced by the jury members, which comprises Dr. Farzana Sadaf from Hamdard University and Maryam Ahmed from Karachi University. Among faculty members, there was a tie for 1st position between two proposals “Empress Market Version II” by Ms. Surraya Shams, faculty at Dow Institute of Medical Technology and “Organic Waste Management and Composting” by Ms. Mehwish Jamali and Prof. Zeba Haq, faculty at Dow International Medical College.

Among the proposals submitted by students, the proposals “Mountains of Garbage: Karachi Looming Crisis and What Needs to Be Done?” by Hareem Fatima MS-1, Dow Medical College (DMC) and “Promoting Low-cost and Recycled Solutions for Sustainable Development (SDGs 9 and 12) by Shehnila Usmani and Syed Awais Aftab Dow College of Pharmacy (DCOP) tied for 1st Position. The 2nd position was awarded to the proposal titled “Microbial Enzyme Production: A Promising Path Towards Sustainable Industries” by Alishba khan and Dr. Mahera Moin of Dow College of Biotechnology. For 3rd position, there was a tie between the proposals viz.: “THE CLEAN and GREEN KARACHI” by Syed Ahmed Arbaaz, Dow Dental College and “Clean and Green Karachi without Chemicals” by Barkha, Dow College of Pharmacy 2nd Year. The program ended with the presentation of the winners to the audience.
