DUHS FLOOD Relief Drive – Phase 1 (District Sehwan)
Executive Summary:
DUHS under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammed Saeed Quraishy, Dow University of Health Sciences, the office of the Registrar Dr. Ashar Afaq and Director Umair Zafar department of Corporate, Alumni & Marketing Communications DUHS has been operating an emergency relief campaign since August 2022 across its institutes as there is an acute shortage of food, shelter, sanitation, clean water, and health and hygiene materials needed for hundreds of thousands of affectees and the numbers are increasing as the flood water is contaminated due to animal corpse and bacterial developments on stagnant water, affecting many. During this 1st phase of campaign establishment DUHS has provided cooked food to 6000 and 10,754 dry items (Juices, Biscuits, Channa, Milk, Dates) to affectees respectively, 24ton 3150 6L safe drinking mineral water through three trucks at relief camp area Lal Bagh District Sehwan.
Dow University of Health Sciences Flood Relief Campaign
DUHS with the support of its hospital doctors treated around 1628 OPD patients through camp services, and conducted health & hygiene discussions with the affected communities in the relief camp in the Sehwan district. Furthermore, DUH gynecologists saw around 235+ (PW) pregnant women out of which 1 was an emergency case as she was bleeding and upon which an ambulance has been called immediately to shift the PW to a nearby delivery facility center/hospital, 180+ dyspepsia cases 80+ acute respiratory cases, 47+ dermatitis, 29 boil, 51 cellulitides, 7 head injuries, 32 skin aches & infections, 471 diarrhea cases, 219 fever/high temperature, 86 vomiting cases and 190 pediatric cases related to diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and infection.
The team of DUHS is also working on the strategy of pooling resources with different aid agencies to maximize the relief operation efficiency and is ready to provide in-kind support and facilitate the relief operation for the next phase as well. Moreover, DUHS has also established 5 tents/camps to facilitate the flood affectees, management DUHS established flood relief teams into sub-teams such as pharmacy, food distribution, water distribution, discipline/monitoring & control team, media team, and coordination team to advance the working of the doctors smoothly.

67 persons participated in establishing a flood relief camp at the district Sehwan Medical, Surgical, Community Medicine, Gynecologist, Pediatrics, House Officer, Physician, Male and Female staff, doctors and students participated in the flood relief case.

Armed forces detached Convoy DUHS comprises Four 60 Seater Buses/Points out of which 3 were filled with first aid medicines, cooked food, and dry items which includes biscuits, juices, sanitary pads, clothes, slippers, and other necessary items. Along with the 3 trucks were loaded with the 3150 mineral water bottles.
The actual condition of the road as the main highway was only 1 foot above the water as both sides were flooded and animal bodies were lying on the hard shoulder of the road which was causing the smell and increasing the toxicity of the water.
The whole day’s activity was under the soaring heat as there was no electricity, clean water, limited shelter, and dust all over was hard to breathe. The activity was at its peak and pace when the news broke out that the nearby dam received some cracks and water started to overflow, so the Registrar made the immediate announcement to halt the operation and wind up everything at the earliest to keep the team and the volunteers safe and secured. As the team, DUHS evacuated the area water level was raised and the roads through which DUHS traveled got submerged and disconnected from the district Sehwan.
