First Cochlear Implant performed by Department of ENT Unit-2, Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau, Civil Hospital Karachi

The Department of ENT Unit-2 at Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi has successfully performed its first Cochlear implant surgery,

The procedure, conducted on February 21, 2025, at the OT Complex, restored hearing for a 4-year-old child with profound hearing loss, offering renewed hope for his developmental and educational future.  

The surgery was made possible through the collaborative efforts of hospital leadership, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Saeed Quraishy T.I. and Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Khalid Bukari.  

Mr. Tuaha Ahmed Faruqi, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Sindh, played a pivotal role in facilitating this achievement. His unwavering commitment and active support were instrumental in ensuring access to this life-changing intervention, furthering the government’s mission to empower persons with disabilities

This team, led by Prof. Sadaf Zia Chairperson ENT and HOD ENT unit-2  gave appreciation to her colleagues including Dr. S.Uzma Naqvi, Dr. Irfan Ahmed, Dr. Danish, and Dr. Hira alongside senior registrars, residents, and support staff whose collective efforts contributed to this achievement.

Furthermore, Dr. Asif Arain from Indus Hospital provided critical mentorship, while Dr. Haroon Khan and Dr. Noweed Ahmed were acknowledged for their foundational guidance in establishing the hospital’s cochlear implant program.
