I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and continuing students in the Dow College of Pharmacy of Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi. Dow college of Pharmacy was established in 2007, reflecting the vision of Vice Chancellor of University. Dow College of Pharmacy was founded in response to the need of better drug delivery system in hospital and retail pharmacy, and also to cater the ever growing need of pharmaceutical industry. As 90 percent of the drug based industry in Pakistan, both national and multi-national, are located at Karachi.
Pharmacy is a distinct profession and on it lays the success of any health program. With the rise of population world wide during the last few decades, it has been realized that the traditional medical and health services now play a limited role in the overall improvement of health status. This fact has driven all health professionals to the common goal of disease prevention and health promotion. In developed countries the clinical direction of Pharmacy has deemphasized the manipulative product oriented and distributive skills and focused more, on the public health awareness. Today, the pharmacists’ attention is directed towards the patient, his environment, and his state of general well-being. Pharmacy has achieved many successes in the past few years, it has undergone a transformation whereby both practice and teaching of the subject has been placed on more quantitative, rational and scientific bases, so much so that the Drug Oriented Pharmacy has now attired itself to Patient Oriented Pharmacy in most of the Western World.
Pharmacists are an integral part of the healthcare system and have the capacity to directly affect the lives and lifestyles of the people with whom they interact. Whether you decide to register as a pharmacist and work in community or hospital pharmacy, enter the pharmaceutical industry, work for government agencies, contribute to research and academia you will have the ability and expertise to help improve the well- being of the nation.
The development of pharmacy education at the Dow college of Pharmacy was very rapid, and in a very short span of time it occupied a prominent position among the Institutions providing Pharmacy Education.

“We have got the greatest message in the Quran for our guidance and enlightenment. All that we have got to do is to know ourselves and the great qualities, virtues and powers that we possess, let us work up to that great ideal. Let us utilize our great potentialities in the right direction. Let us forego our personal interest and conveniences for the collective good of our people, and, for a higher and nobler cause.”
